FOCUS SERVICE: SHEFFIELD CHURCH

As a church, we at St Paul’s support the Focus Service. This support can take the form of donations to help the running cost of Focus Service. There are envelopes available to allow for a monthly regular gift to Focus Service. If you would like a set of envelopes for 2012, please contact Peter Franklin.

Revd David Middleton from the Focus Service will be preaching on Sunday 11^th March at our 10 am service.

AT LENT One of the groups coming has offered to provide a meal for us on the first week (next week on Wednesday 29^th February at 7.30 pm) – Murray needs to know the number of people who will be coming; there are invitations in church. BEAUCHIEF ABBEY LENT LECTURES 2012 The 5 weekly lectures begin at 7.00 pm on Wed 29^th Feb at St Andrew’s Psalter Lane Church. TEARFUND For members of the congregation who donate each month to what used to be Sponsored Children; you may remember that for the past few years a proportion of the money has been sent to The Shelter of Hope in Zimbabwe. Now that St Paul’s is no longer supporting the Shelter, all the funds you donate will be sent to Tearfund for their Children at Risk programme. The total monthly donation from St Paul’s will be £30. CONFIRMATION 2012 We have the go ahead for a Confirmation Service with The Bishop of Sheffield on Wednesday 19^th September at 7.30 pm. We will be joined by candidates from other local churches but anyone who would like to be confirmed should have a word with Murray (it will be a few years before we have another Confirmation service here at St Paul’s.)

SAFETY REMINDER Please make sure that you have switched off all appliances, portable heaters, lights etc before you lock up the building. If you have turned down a radiator valve, please ensure that you turn it back up for those that follow you. For the safety of all babies and children who come to St Paul’s, may we also take this opportunity to remind everyone to replace socket covers when you have finished using equipment.

THE PADLEY PILGRIMAGE - an interdiocesan

pilgrimage in honour of the Padley Martyrs, Blessed Robert Ludlam and Blessed Nicholas Garlick on Sunday 15^th July (Assemble 3.00 pm at Grindleford Station, Mass commences at 3.30 pm.) Just to let you know that we had a great time last week in a very cosy cottage in Youlgreave. We had great views over the beautiful Bradford Dale and to open country and hills beyond. It was cold! but the cottage had good heating and a log burning stove which was great fun to use and really belted out the heat! Each day we were able to enjoy walks from the cottage down by the river and around the village. It was a bit slippery in places on the snow and ice but there is something very special about walking in the snow. The great thing was that it really felt away from it all, even though it was less than an hour’s drive from home.

St. Paul’s Church and Centre has four bright, attractive rooms, a well equipped kitchen and two smaller drink stations which are available for all types of groups, clubs, meetings and functions. Most rooms have disabled access. Catering for conferences etc can easily be arranged. Prices range from £13 for general use with special rates for community groups and all day bookings.

CONSULTATION – HOUSING As part of work on preparing a new citywide development plan, we are identifying more potential housing sites across the city. Over the coming weeks, we are asking for your views on suggested sites in your area. The new sites that we are consulting on in South Sheffield are:

I had a great time with the Year One children from Meersbrook Bank School last Thursday. One little lad was very keen to tell me what went on at his church, which was nice. They then went round drawing some of the lovely things we have in church before more questions and me ‘dressing up’ in my robes for them. As always there were some questions I did not feel I answered as well as I might – this time it was “Why do we pray to God?!!”

TEARFUND For those members of the congregation who donate each month to what used to be Sponsored Children, you may remember that for the past few years a proportion of the money has been sent to the Shelter of Hope in Zimbabwe. However, now that St Paul’s is no longer supporting the Shelter, all the funds you donate will now be sent to Tearfund for their Children at Risk programme. The monthly donation will now be £30. From Murray – your Choice for Lent!

You have three choices (at least) for something to do in Lent! The problem is that they are all on Wednesday evenings!

First there is Questions! Questions! which I will be leading in the Meeting Place. It is a series based around questions which I pose and answer – (that’s the easy bit!) but the idea is that this will give you the opportunity to ask other questions which are more important to you.

Barbara will be speaking at our Ash Wednesday Holy Communion service on 22^nd February at 7.30 pm and Questions! Questions! will begin the next week on 29^th.

Secondly, Bishop Steven is leading five sessions on prayer based on the Lord’s Prayer, down at the Cathedral also starting at 7.30 pm on 29^th February. Bishop Steven’s course last year was very much appreciated and it gives you the opportunity to meet up with people from other churches. Prayer is so vital to our relationship with God and the course is suitable to people who are new to the Christian faith, as well as those who have been believers for many years. He is very down to earth and approachable – I would go if I wasn’t busy!

Thirdly, if you want something a bit more academic Prof. John Rogerson is presenting a series of five lectures entitled Law and Justice in the Old Testament. These will take place at St Andrew’s Psalter Lane starting at 7.00 pm on 29^th February. Some of you will remember John from when he assisted my predecessor Malcolm with ministry here at St Paul’s. The course will be about “the prophetic impulse that sought to shape a society that reflected the divine image”(!)

NEW GROUP “Lose the Blues” is a new support group especially for those suffering from post natal depression. Following the success of the Hillsborough Mum & Baby Group, this small group will be run by Home Start, Sheffield, and will be held every Monday from 1-3.00 pm in The Upper Hall. Home Start has been providing support and friendship for families for 30 years. They aim to give children the best possible start in life, by supporting parents to grow in confidence and develop and strengthen their relationship with their children. Emotional support is provided to help parents to find ways to manage and resolve problems. Home Start (not to be confused with Sure Start!) hopes to start the new group here at St Paul’s on Monday 16^th January.

There have been times, while have been ill, when I have really struggled to carry on with the voluntary work I do in our local Scout Group. Scouts and Guides may be international organisations but they all depend on volunteers in groups and most groups only need to lose a few leaders before they are in real danger of closing down!

I am involved with Scouting for a number of reasons. One is that I believe that, as Christians, we all need to find ways of engaging with our society and being Christians within it, finding appropriate ways of making known our faith and seeking to make a difference in our world. Another reason for my involvement is that the Scout Group is linked to St Paul’s Church – it is “46^th Sheffield St Paul’s Scout Group’! The link with the church may not be great but I want to maintain it as much as I can, and currently five of our leaders are members of different churches.

Volunteering isn’t always rewarding! It is often hard work and the children don’t always give you the affirmation you would like! What keeps me going is the gratitude I have towards the Scout Movement for the experiences and foundations that it gave me as a young person and for all it has given to other members of my family.

Last night was also a great delight. We have been working with the Cubs on their astronomy badge and I have been waiting for a clear night when I could take my small telescope down so that they could have a look. We were treated to great views of Saturn and three of its moons and a spectacular view of the full moon. What was more and to my surprise, the Cubs were delighted – they thought it was really cool to see things ‘for real’ through a telescope!
